Tours:
Verstraete Travel recognizes that there is a compelling need to preserve the memory and tell the story of Canada’s military and civilian contributions and efforts during the Second World War. To date there is no significant Canadian memorial that marks these achievements, anywhere.
We will be offering various tours to Normandy that include the Juno Beach Centre opening ceremonies on June 6, 2003. Tour details have been finalized and are available in the brochure.
A Brief History:
More than 1,000,000 Canadians took up arms for Canada during the Second World War. More than 40,000 lost their lives.
Canadians had been part of an Allied effort to rid Europe and the Pacific of tyranny since 1939. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, young men from small towns and big cities across Canada stormed the beaches on the Normandy coast in Nazi-occupied France.
Today, more than half a century later, the Juno Beach Centre will be built on this historic location. Designed to inspire and inform, this centre will be a forum for learning about Canadians and Canada and will preserve the memory of our country's contribution to the Second World War.
The Minister of Canadian Heritage has designated the Juno Beach landing site to be a site of national historic significance to Canada. (Information from www.junobeach.org)
