Oberammergau 2010
Historical Background:
In 1632 when Oberammergau was gripped by the black plague which had killed many inhabitants, the villagers took an oath that they would react the passion and suffering of Christ every 10 years. The village was spared and the first Passion Play was performed in 1634. Oberammergau has kept this oath ever since.
The Passion Play depicts the story of Christ beginning with the entry into Jerusalem and ending with the resurrection and transfiguration. The performance takes all day (morning & afternoon) with a long break for lunch. The music for the play was written in 1815 by the Oberammergau school teacher Rochus Dedler. Employing a large choir and orchestra his compositions still provide the musical setting for the entire play. The cast for the Passion Play is drawn entirely from all walks of life within the village. They spent at least two years rehearsing and preparing for this event.
The next Oberammergau Passion Play will take place in 2010.
